Remembering Aaliyah 12 years later

A true significant figure in R&B music, it would’ve been her 34th birthday today. The death of Aaliyah shocked the nation when it was reported the soulful singer was tragically killed in a plane crash.

On her way home from a music video shoot on 25 August, 2001, a plane crash killed Aaliyah and eight members of her film crew. She was 22 years old at the time of her death.

Since the time of her death, Aaliyah’s music has continued to achieve great success with numerous posthumous releases. Aaliyah is estimated to have sold between 24 to 32 million albums worldwide.

She has been credited for helping redefine contemporary R&B and hip hop, earning her well-deserved nicknames in the industry as the “Princess of R&B” and “Queen of Urban Pop”.

Successful music collaborations with Missy Elliott and Timbaland created the rhythms needed for Aaliyah’s second album titled One in a Million. The album sold eight million worldwide. As her chart topping hit albums continued to rise, Aaliyah begun to work with R & B’s most talent singers and producers in the industry.

Her album – One in a Million – has been recognized by writers and music critics as redefining the genre. Selling 10 million copies worldwide within just a few months, the album was Aaliyah’s breakout album and a major milestone in the careers of Missy Elliott and Timbaland.

The week after Aaliyah’s death, her third studio album, Aaliyah, rose from number 19 to the number one spot on the Billboard Music Charts.

She is listed by Billboard as the tenth MOST successful female R&B artist of the past 25 years, and earned the 27th position as most successful R&B artist of all time.
